The Role of Women

Conservative Christian View

Summary

  • The conservative Christian view is known as complementarianism
  • Men and women have different but complementary roles and responsibilities in marriage, family, and church
  • These differences are ordained by God as part of His created order and described throughout scripture
  • Order and function are distinct between genders, not value or quality

Supporting Conservative View

Many passages throughout the bible support the conservative view. Key verses are listed below (ESV):
Marriage and family
Ephesian 5
  • 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands....

Rebuttals to Liberal Views

  • Criticism: The bible is sexist
    • Response: The bible shows God’s love to both genders and especially women. Critics who label the bible as sexist have not studied the whole of scripture. There are many women used and blessed by God throughout scripture (e.g., Eve, Rahab, Deborah, Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Esther, Mary, etc.). Many of Jesus’ and Apostle Paul’s women supporters are named (Mary and Martha, Mary Magdalene, Priscilla, Phoebe, Lydia, etc.). God’s characteristics are described with feminine metaphors (Isa 66:13, 49:15, Dt 32:11, Lk 15:8-10, Lk 13:34). Wisdom is personified as a woman in Proverbs (Pr 1:20-33, 8:1-9:12).
